DVI is the newest video signaling technology designed for the new generation of video display devices such as large LCD displays, plasma screens and projectors that are capable of displaying resolutions of 1280 x 1024 and higher. Developed by the DDWG (Digital Display Workgroup) DVI is capable of handling up to 9.6Gbits per second which is substantially higher than the previous technologies.

The advantages of DVI are:
1) Ability to handle higher resolutions at higher refresh rates.
2) Maintain greater images quality at the higher resolutions.
3) Transmit video signals through longer lengths of cable.

The Digital Display Working Group (DDWG) is an open industry group lead by Intel, Compaq, Fujitsu, Hewlett Packard, IBM, NEC and Silicon Image. The objective of the Digital Display Working Group is to address the industry's requirements for a digital connectivity specification for high-performance PCs and digital displays.
